Some Sad Statistics
- Half of Tanzania's 16 million children are not in school, nor are they learning life skills or employment skills
- 10 percent of first pregnancies in Tanzania occur in girls 15 years of age and below
- Over one million Tanzanians are HIV positive and there are estimated to be 65,000 babies who have been born seropositive for HIV
- Children affected by AIDS in Tanzania are estimated to number more than 800,000
- The number of AIDS orphans in Tanzania is estimated to be more than one million
- As early as 1994 it was estimated that, in some regions of Tanzania, up to 8.3 percent of newborn babies were born HIV-infected. Most of these children die before their second birthday
- Two and a half million Tanzanian children under five years old are malnourished
- Every day 450 children die in Tanzania largely due to preventable diseases combined with malnutrition
- 43 percent of Tanzanian children are stunted in growth, 31 percent are underweight, and 45 percent are anaemic
- 30 percent of all school age children in Tanzania are deficient in Vitamin A which is the leading cause of blindness and preventable childhood illnesses
- Malaria is the leading killer of children under the age of 5 and it accounts for 15 per cent of child deaths in Tanzania
- Pneumonia kills 38,000 children in Tanzania every year.
