Movies, Actors, Gardens and Goodbyes
It seems that February is award show month (Oscars, BAFTAs, etc.) so it should come as no surprise that February at the Boona Baana Center also had an entertainment theme.
First of all it was a road trip to Mlimani City for a Saturday afternoon matinee. Eva, Stefan and Kirk took the kids to see “Bolt” as part of their Christmas present. Everyone seemed to enjoy the animated show although Shabani and Issack seemed to get a bigger thrill out of the automated hot air dryers in the toilets.

The Boona Baana Center always gets some interesting visitors and February was no exception. We were delighted to meet Ellen Gaddy with New Day Africa. This is an American NGO that has recently come on board as a funder for the Boona Baana Center and we are very grateful for their support. You can check out their website at http://www.newdayafrica.org/index.html And in keeping with the entertainment theme, Ellen brought her friend, Aubrey Dollar, with her. The television viewers out there might know Aubrey from her portrayal of newspaper reporter, Cindy Thomas, on the ABC television series, “Women’s Murder Club”.
After that bit of glitz and glamour it was back to reality! The kids were kept busy just recently when Elizabeth and Cosby (2 wonderful volunteers from the States) brought over a group of their friends as well as some shovels and other gardening tools. The kids helped to plant a garden just behind the volunteer dormitory and they will be learning some good old fashioned gardening skills. With any luck, we will soon be feasting on some very fresh spinach, beans, pumpkins and watermelons.
And just as all good things must come to an end, I will be bidding a fond farewell to the Boona Baana Center and the Green Door Home. I have had the pleasure of helping out for the last 14 months and will soon be returning to Canada. But I will be leaving with some wonderful memories of both the children as well as our terrific volunteers. It has been a pleasure and an honour to assist with this very worthy cause.
Asante sana,
Boona Baana
