Baby Safe Trust Fund
Summary:
The Baby Safe Trust Fund aims to initially enroll and “adopt” 10 HIV positive pregnant women
during the years July 2004 to June 2007.
Objectives:The Primary objective of the Trust Fund is “to
ensure the prevention of transmission of HIV to the
unborn/newborn babies of HIV positive pregnant
women”.
The Trust Fund also aims:
- to advocate for women by assisting them in accessing free HIV testing to pregnant women and free counseling to those who test positive
- to advocate for women by assisting them in accessing free counseling and education on prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission to women
- to enroll up to 10 HIV positive pregnant women in order to advocate for the women by assisting them in accessing programs which will:-
- ensure that they receive antiretroviral medications which will prolong and increase the quality of their lives
- counsel them regarding their HIV status and the impact it will have on their pregnancy and child
- counsel them regarding preventative measures required to prevent transmission of HIV to their unborn child
- ensure that delivery of their child is safe and in the best interests of mother and child
- ensure that mother and child are afforded the necessary medications and precautions to prevent transmission of HIV to the child
- ensure that the mother receives all pre and post-birth medications and precautions to ensure her survival and good health
- counsel the mother on the dangers of breastfeeding a baby when HIV positive
- counsel and educate the mother on ways to ensure the baby receives proper and good nutrition sans breast feeding
- provide mother and child with formula powder, clean water and other essential to ensure baby’s survival and good health
- ensure that the mother receives necessary medications (including antiretrovirals) to prolong and increase the quality of her life
- counsel the mother and immediate family members regarding the mother’s plan for her child (or children, as the case may be) in the event of her death.
- In the event of the death of the mother, ensure that the mother’s plan for settlement of her child or children is, if possible, implemented and is in the best interests of the child(ren).
